Lobsterman Ethan DeBerry fishes out of Popham Wharf on the Miss Lindsay — a tidy white- and-pale-blue vessel, just four years old. Ethan often sets single traps in the nearshore waters off Seguin Island. Here, where the seafloor is craggily diverse, a lobsterman has to set with great care. He and sternman Dana Hagarthy say hauling here feels like “real fishing.”
It’s also a high-traffic area. BIW warships and cruise vessels churn up and down the Kennebec River. Sailboats sweep around the picturesque islands, where seals rest, seabirds roost and lighthouse keepers tend their hermitages. And this summer, one more vessel is added to the busy mix: A heavy barge, the Cedonia Crosby, is supporting construction of a permanent dock on Seguin Island. As the island becomes more accessible, and Maine continues to catch the eye, marine traffic patterns will certainly continue to change. (Photos by Kate Cart)
