On June 8, 18 Phippsburg elementary students joined clam diggers Terry Watson, Casey Watson and David Gray, along with Tyler Pascocello of Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT), in the Hermit Island mudflat. Students cavorted in the mud, found a big milky ribbon worm and even collected a few shellfish. This field trip is a yearly collaboration between the elementary school, Phippsburg clam diggers and KELT. Students develop deeper relationships to their town’s people and ecosystems – and get to be kids playing in the mud. (Photos by Kate Cart)
